Mapping Slavery Newark

Noelle Lorraine Williams | Artist, Researcher and Curator

LINK TO INTERACTIVE MAP

Welcome.

Mapping Slavery Newark reveals a few of the countless streets, buildings, waterways and people connected to slavery.

The first stage of this map was created by Black Power! 19th Century for the Inspire! Newark's Underground Railroad Exhibition on the occasion of the creation of the Harriet Tubman Monument 2023.

... [Newark, N.J.] is a very important place. Southern interest is powerful; shoes & carriages etc. made [here] are bartered for the gold of the South, which is gotten by the unrequited toil of the slave.

— Angelina Grimké (1837)
