Welcome

Who gets to be called an "American Revolutionary"?

Black women in the Americas have fought for their independence for centuries. This project, "Revolutionary Black Women: America 250"examines the ways enslaved Black women fought for, won and redefined freedom over before, during and after the American Revolution.

In 2026, the country will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and this project seeks to highlight the first American Revolutionaries - Black women.
